Anticipation GuideAs an introduction to the unit, students agreed or disagreed with statements about controversial topics related to the book. They were then asked to gather in groups - everyone who agreed stood on one side of the room, and everyone who disagreed stood on the other side of the room - and participate in a mini-debate in which they explained their opinions.

Figurative LanguageStudents practiced using descriptive language in their own writing.
Symbol TRackingStudents were given this graphic organizer to help them track their assigned symbol (tree, mouth, mirror, or closet) as they read the novel. They then used this to write their culminating literary analysis essay.
